The UMCOR Hotline

August 18, 2000

UMCOR has received requests from the United Methodist Conferences in Liberia, Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo for grants which will be used to assist those who have been affected by war. In Liberia, people are striving to recover from years of war. In Sierra Leone, the church is attempting to provide relief and begin recovery work in the midst of continuing violence. The ongoing war in and around the Democratic Republic of Congo has displaced thousands of people, and the church is providing refugee camps and feeding centers. To join in relief and recovery efforts please give to the following:

UMCOR has sent an initial emergency response grant through Church World Service to help with flood relief and recovery in New Jersey. Clean-up, health and school kits have been distributed, and disaster response workers are assessing damage and planning for long-term rebuilding and recovery. Please give to UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response, Advance #901670-1. Designate your gift "New Jersey Flood Relief."

Flooding and landslides have left at least 4 million people homeless in Northeast India. There has also been immense loss to crops, livestock and infrastructure. UMCOR is working through our ecumenical partners to provide relief. Your gifts to International Disaster Response, Advance #982450-8 are urgently needed. Please designate "India Floods."

Volunteers are still needed for rebuilding from the flooding in New Jersey caused by Hurricane Floyd. Teams are also needed in Oklahoma to finish reconstruction work from the tornadoes. Please call (800) 918-3100 for further information.

Gifts may be made through local United Methodist churches, or by calling 1-800-554-8583. Credit card donations are accepted. (Read more about how you can help UMCOR's emergency responses.)

Please pray for all who suffer from natural and human-made disasters, hunger, and poverty.
