The UMCOR Hotline

July 28, 2000

UMCOR has responded to a request from the Central Conference of The United Methodist Church in the Philippines with a grant which will be used to provide humanitarian relief to people affected by two typhoons that struck the area recently. The funds will help provide food, medicine, temporary shelter and crop rehabilitation. An UMCOR grant has also been sent to the Evangelical Church of Nicaragua to provide food and blankets for earthquake victims. To support these and other disaster response efforts around the world, please give to UMCOR's International Disaster Response, Advance #982450-8.

UMCOR disaster response workers are traveling to Minnesota to assist with assessment and recovery plans following the tornado in Granite Falls and recent flooding. People affected by the flooding in North Dakota are completing the clean up phase of recovery and will begin rebuilding in September, when structures have dried out sufficiently. To join in this recovery work, please give to UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response, Advance #901670-1.

UMCOR continues to respond to the drought and famine in Africa. This past week a grant was sent to provide relief in Kenya. The response to the famine affecting Eritrea, Ethiopia and Kenya will be long-term. Please give generously to Africa Famine Relief, UMCOR Advance #101250-4.

The UMCOR Depot has shipped its supply of health kits to the Republics of Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. More health kits are needed to restock the shelves. School kits are also needed. Please call the Depot at (800) 814-8765 for instructions on assembling kits. Information is also available on the UMCOR web page: http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/kits.html.

Gifts may be made through local United Methodist churches, or by calling 1-800-554-8583. Credit card donations are accepted. (Read more about how you can help UMCOR's emergency responses.)

Please pray for all who suffer from natural and human-made disasters, hunger, and poverty.
