UMCOR is responding to the famine in Ethiopia through ACT (Action by Churches Together, the relief and development arm of the World Council of Churches). ACT partners are providing food relief to families who have lost everything in the drought and to severely malnourished children; and seeds, farm tools, fertilizers, and livestock to help re-establish food reserves. Please join in these relief efforts by giving to Ethiopian Famine Relief, Advance #101250-4.
UMCOR has sent additional grants totaling $450,000 to the Oklahoma Indian Missionary and North Carolina Conferences for ongoing recovery work from last year's floods and tornadoes. Your gifts to the Churchwide Appeal for Major Storm Devastation '99, Advance #982460-1 will continue to help people recover and rebuild.
UMCOR has sent initial emergency response grants to Kentucky following this week's tornado, and to Montana and North Dakota to provide assistance for residents of the border town of Fairview which was devastated by an explosion and fire. Recovery work continues in two additional areas of Kentucky which suffered from earlier floods and tornadoes and in Missouri where hundreds of families were affected by flash flooding. Please give to UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response, Advance #901670-1.
Although the first hurricane of the season has already developed in the Eastern Pacific, hurricane season officially begins June 1. Scientists are forecasting an above-average hurricane season which means stronger, longer-lasting storms are possible. In preparation for this year's season, UMCOR has established an Advance number for Hurricanes 2000, #982350-4.
Gifts may be made through local United Methodist churches, or by calling 1-800-554-8583. Credit card donations are accepted. (Read more about how you can help UMCOR's emergency responses.)
Please pray for all who suffer from natural and human-made disasters, hunger, and poverty.
