The UMCOR Hotline

February 15, 2000

The Disaster Response Coordinator for the South Georgia conference reports that three subdivisions in Camilla, Georgia were devastated by the tornadoes. Their initial assessments are that 250 homes in Camilla were destroyed or received major damage--90% of these were mobile homes. At least 50 other homes in nearby Colquitt county were destroyed or heavily damaged. At least 19 people lost their lives and more than 100 were injured. Volunteers will be needed in the next few days to help clear debris. Please call the Volunteer Line (800) 918-3100 if you can provide this kind of assistance. Your gifts to UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response, #901670-1, designated "Georgia Tornadoes" will assist those who must rebuild their homes and lives.

Mozambique and South Africa are experiencing catastrophic flooding. UMCOR is sending initial emergency response funds to the United Methodist Church in Mozambique, the Methodist Church of Southern Africa and the South African Council of Churches which will be used to purchase tents, food, medicine and other relief items. UMCOR is also sending a shipment of medicine and two mobile water purification plants to Mozambique. Please join in the response efforts by giving to UMCOR Advance #156500-0. You may designate either "Mozambique" or "South Africa". At this point, financial gifts are the most effective way to respond to this emergency.     Please pray for all who suffer from natural and human-made disasters, hunger, and poverty.
