The UMCOR Hotline

February 11, 2000

Mozambique and South Africa are experiencing catastrophic flooding. UMCOR is in communication with Bishop Machado in Mozambique and with leaders of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa and the South African Council of Churches, and is sending emergency funds to these partners which will be used to purchase tents, food, medicine and other relief items. Homes have been swept away in the floods and landslides, and roads have been cut off. Please join in the response efforts by giving to UMCOR Advance #156500-0. You may designate either "Mozambique" or "South Africa". At this point, financial gifts are the most effective way to respond to this emergency..

Clean-up and repair work is proceeding in Owensboro, Kentucky and surrounding rural areas which were struck by tornadoes at the beginning of January. Your gifts to UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response, Advance #901670-1 will ensure that UMCOR has the resources to support this and other recovery efforts in the United States..

UMCOR staff and consultants conducted a disaster response training workshop in the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference last week. This training may be the first of its kind provided for a Native American constituency. Both the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference and the Oklahoma Annual Conference are continuing their rebuilding and recovery work from last May's tornadoes. To support ongoing recovery work, give to the Churchwide Appeal for Major Storm Devastation '99, #982460-1.

Gifts may be made through local United Methodist churches, or by calling 1-800-554-8583.Credit card donations are accepted. (Read more about how you can help UMCOR's emergency responses.)

Please pray for all who suffer from natural and human-made disasters, hunger, and poverty.
