The UMCOR Hotline

November 20, 2001: Funds are urgently needed for the Methodist Church of Haiti's Health Program. Considerable international pressure is being placed on the Haitian government, and because of this the church, though not at fault, has lost its European Union grant for the health program. They need $100,000 to continue the work of seven health clinics in the year 2002. In most cases, these clinics provide the only health care for the communities they serve. They provide a doctor, a nurse, community health workers, support for traditional midwives, sterilized equipment, hygiene training, HIV/AIDS education, pre and post-natal care, and TB treatment. Your gifts to UMCOR Advance #418200, designated "Haiti Health Program" will help ensure that this vital ministry continues.

For much of the United States, the 2001 Hurricane Season was a light one, but many of our neighbors, in Texas, Florida, the Caribbean, and Central America have suffered extensive damage from this year's hurricanes and tropical storms. People in Houston, Texas are continuing to rebuild from the flooding caused by Tropical Storm Allison early in the season. UMCOR is also providing support for recovery efforts in Florida, the Bahamas, Cuba, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Thousands of people lost their homes, their crops, and all their possessions. Please give generously to UMCOR Advance #982350, Hurricanes 2001. Volunteer teams are urgently needed to help with the rebuilding in Texas. Please call (800) 918-3100 for further information.

They will also continue to provide relief supplies for the people in Afghanistan and for refugees in Pakistan and Tajikistan. UMCOR and its partners are working to provide the supplies that will help people survive the rapidly approaching winter. A gift of $307 will provide a shelter kit for a family of six, and $118.50 will provide them with kitchen, bedding, and hygiene supplies. In Pakistan, the Church World Service quilt project is underway. Refugee women will earn money by making quilts with materials supplied by Church World Service. The finished quilts will be given to refugees and displaced persons. Your gifts to Love in the Midst of Tragedy, Advance #901125-3 make it possible for UMCOR to respond to needs in the US and other countries that continue to arise as a result of the September 11 attacks.

Gifts may be made through local United Methodist churches, or by calling 1-800-554-8583. Credit card donations are accepted. (Read more about how you can help UMCOR's emergency responses.)
