The UMCOR Hotline

September 12, 2001: The violence perpetrated upon New York City and Washington, D.C. during the morning hours of September 11 has still not been quantified. Mayor Guiliani of New York said, The casualty count "will be more than anyone can bear." Churches, mosques and synagogues around the country have held prayer services. We at the General Board of Global Ministries and the United Methodist Committee on Relief appreciate your prayers for the staff who have lost loved ones and those who feel the impact on our community.

UMCOR has been in contact with Bishops from New York, New Jersey, Baltimore-Washington, Central and Western Pennsylvania, New Jersey and the Virginia annual conferences to strategize a response to this emergency. Plans are being made for supportive caregiving for adults, youth and children and case management. You may join in this response by giving to UMCOR's Advance #901125-3, Love in the Midst of Tragedy.

Those people wishing to volunteer may call 1-800-918-3100. Your contact information will be taken and you will be notified when volunteers can be most effectively utilized.

Gifts may be made through local United Methodist churches, or by calling 1-800-554-8583. Credit card donations are accepted. (Read more about how you can help UMCOR's emergency responses.)

And, please pray for those who are hungry, displaced, sick or in poverty because of these and other natural and human-made disasters, and for the workers who minister to them.
