Recent flooding in Kentucky has generated requests for assistance. UMCOR has provided funds to the Holston Annual Conference to allow the assessment of communities affected by last weekend's flooding. Holston has received additional funds to assist in responses already underway in Tazwell County, Virginia and Green County, Tennessee. Recurring flooding in West Virginia has slowed recovery efforts. Volunteers are needed to assist with clean up. Volunteers are also needed in the Houston area as they move into the rebuilding phase of their recovery following Tropical Storm Allison earlier this summer. UMCOR is responding to the current drought/famine crisis in Nicaragua through a local partner Consejo de Iglesias Evangelicas (CEPAD). CEPAD is assisting 200 families from 18 communities with monthly food packets, rehabilitating water irrigation equipment, providing seeds for new plantings and pastoral care. Tropical Storm Chantal has recently been downgraded. However, experts expect the storm to reorganize and strengthen as it moves across the Atlantic. UMCOR stands ready to respond if Chantal makes landfall.
