UMCOR is in communication with the Methodist Church of Peru and our ecumenical partners in the area affected by the earthquake. Their response will focus on isolated communities that can only be reached on foot or on horseback and are not expected to receive help from the government or other agencies. In these communities many people are missing, between 60 and 100 percent of the housing has been destroyed; school, churches, municipal and community buildings have crumbled; agricultural lands and irrigation channel have been buried in layers of soil and rubble; and potable water is scarce. UMCOR's partners are working to provide blankets, excavation and building tools, kitchen utensils, wood, and roofing materials. The Texas and Rio Grande Conferences' disaster response teams are working together to clean up after the flooding in the Houston area caused by Tropical Storm Allison and to plan for long-term recovery. Please give generously to UMCOR's Hurricanes 2001, Advance #982350. Volunteers are needed to help with clean up. Nearly 6,000 homes were damaged in the flooding in Louisiana. They will need volunteers to help with repairs and rebuilding in the coming weeks. For more information, please call the Volunteer Line at (800) 918-3100.
