UMCOR continues to respond to the aftermath of tropical storm Allison. Thousands of flood buckets full of cleaning supplies have been sent from the UMCOR Depot and distributed in Texas and Louisiana.
UMCOR continues to send consultants to work with the Texas Annual Conference in responding to this disaster. Next week UMCOR will provide training in case management-- the process of assisting people through the complicated and emotionally draining recovery process. Disaster workers in the Rio Grande Conference, who received training following earlier Texas floods, will be working with the Texas conference as well.
Although this disaster is no longer in the news headlines, it is a major disaster and will require a long-term, large-scale recovery effort. Please give generously to UMCOR's Hurricanes 2001, Advance #982350. Volunteers are needed to help with clean up. For more information, please call the Volunteer Line at (800) 918-3100.
The UMCOR Depot needs to replenish its supply of flood buckets. For assembly and shipping instructions, call the Depot at (800) 814-8765 or visit UMCOR's Emergency Kits web page.
At the request of the Wisconsin Annual Conference, UMCOR has sent a $10,000 emergency grant to assist people affected by the tornado in Siren. Conference disaster response workers have toured the area to assess damage and an UMCOR consultant will be traveling to the area on Monday. To help people recover from this disaster, please give to UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response, #901670.
UMCOR has sent a grant to support a vocational training and accelerated learning program in Gbason Town, Liberia. This school is for war-affected youth, many of them child soldiers who now must be reintegrated into society and learn skills that will enable them to pursue a livelihood by non-violent means. UMCOR has also recently responded with two emergency grants to assist thousands of displaced persons fleeing the fighting in Lofa County, Liberia. To join in these relief and recovery efforts, please give to UMCOR's International Disaster Response, Advance #982450.
Gifts may be made through local United Methodist churches, or by calling 1-800-554-8583. Credit card donations are accepted. (Read more about how you can help UMCOR's emergency responses.)
