Medicine Box Instructions Have Changed
Recent flooding in Mississippi has added to the disaster recovery needs in that state. Damage is widespread throughout the state from severe storms, tornadoes and flooding in recent weeks. United Methodists are participating in seven interfaith disaster recovery groups in the state. Funds and volunteers are needed for debris removal, repairs and rebuilding. Residents and disaster workers along the Red River in North Dakota and Minnesota are preparing for flooding. The river is expected to rise to a level as high or higher than that of the 1997 floods. UMCOR has sent a $100,000 dollar grant to the Methodist Church of Italy to provide shelter for refugees. The majority of the refugees are from Kosovo and other Balkan regions. UMCOR continues to facilitate war recovery, community development, and reconciliation projects in Kosovo and Serbia. Please give to UMCOR Advance #333405 "Kosovo Emergency."
In February, Typhoon Aurang hit Eastern Visayas and Mindanao in the Philippines. Heavy rains caused flooding in the lowlands which destroyed agricultural products. Landslides in the mountains crushed homes and farms, and heavy winds knocked down houses. UMCOR has responded to a request from the United Methodist Church in the Philippines with a grant that will help provide food, medical assistance, building materials for homes, and agricultural assistance.
