Medicine Box Instructions Have Changed
UMCOR has sent grants to provide famine relief in Sudan, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Four camps in Southern Sudan were established three years ago for Sudanese who had been displaced by war and famine. The camps have become permanent villages and UMCOR continues to work through our ecumenical partners to provide food and other essential items and support long-term development efforts. Funds will also be used to assist more than 70,000 refugees in Kenya, most of them from Southern Sudan which is predominantly Christian. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, UMCOR continues to support feeding programs in three different Annual Conferences. These feeding centers serve children and mothers who have been displaced by the fighting throughout the country. Recovery work continues following the earthquake in El Salvador. An UMCOR grant has been sent to assist peasant farmers who are members of coffee cooperatives and are struggling to repair the damage to their land and their homes from the earthquake. The organization Rapprochement in Beit Sahour is assisting hundreds of Palestinians whose homes have been heavily damaged or destroyed by shelling.
