UMCOR has sent emergency grants in response to the flooding in Eastern Hungary and the Ukraine. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated in what is the region's worst flooding in 100 years. Funds will help provide food, hygiene items, blankets, drinking water, medical supplies and other relief goods. In the long-term, UMCOR partners will work to rehabilitate homes that have been damaged or destroyed. To join in this response, please give to UMCOR's International Disaster Response, #982450.
In partnership with the Christian Council of Churches, The United Methodist Church in Mozambique has purchased 20 tons of food for people affected by the flooding. Funds from UMCOR have made this relief work possible. The food will be distributed in the Mutarara District, where 70,000 people have been displaced. The church is also providing relief for people in other flood-affected provinces. This response is possible because of your generous gifts to the Churchwide Appeal for Flood Recovery in Mozambique and Neighboring Countries, Advance #156500.
Interfaith recovery groups have formed in seven different areas of Mississippi to facilitate long-term recovery from the recent storms that have battered that state. There will be a need for extensive rebuilding work. Please give to UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response, Advance #901670 to join in these relief efforts.
Please pray for the people of Macedonia as ethnic conflict erupts in that country. UMCOR's partner, ACT (Action by Churches Together) is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to respond if the conflict spreads. Relief items are on hand and relief organizations are prepared if there is a major influx of displaced persons to surrounding countries. Interfaith groups in Macedonia are working for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
UMCOR's ongoing work in the Balkans includes housing rehabilitation, community development, agricultural support, job training programs and youth work. UMCOR works with both Albanian and Serbian populations in Kosovo and Serbia and continues to work with different ethnic groups in Bosnia. Reconciliation and peace building between ethnic groups is an integral component in all of UMCOR's Balkan programs. To join in this work, please give to UMCOR Advance #333405 "Kosovo Emergency."
Gifts may be made through local United Methodist churches, or by calling 1-800-554-8583. Credit card donations are accepted. (Read more about how you can help UMCOR's emergency responses.)
Please participate generously in the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering this Sunday, March 25. UMCOR depends on this offering to undergird its entire ministry.
