UMCOR continues to support the efforts of the United Methodist Church in Mozambique to provide relief from this year's and last year's flooding. Current relief and recovery efforts include providing food and other relief items for thousands of displaced families, water purification (see photo), and the construction of homes for people who have had to relocate. Several provinces in the central area of the country are currently experiencing flooding. UMCOR is also responding through our ecumenical partners to the flooding in Malawi. Please remember that recovery from the earthquakes in El Salvador and India is a process that will continue long after these disasters are out of the news. UMCOR will be supporting relief and recovery work for the next two or three years. Our partners in theses two countries are committed to facilitating long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts. UMCOR has sent an emergency response grant to the North Alabama Conference to assist with clean-up and recovery work following severe storms in February. Mississippi and Arkansas also experienced heavy damage. In Mississippi, community groups have formed to coordinate rebuilding work following the tornado. Disaster response workers in Washington state are assessing the extent of the earthquake damage to private homes. Through United Methodist and ecumenical partners, UMCOR is responding to people suffering from famine in Afghanistan and many African countries. In all of these countries, the famine is caused by a combination of weather events and war.
