Mozambique and Malawi are once again experiencing catastrophic flooding. Between the two countries, hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced by the floods.
In the wake of last year's flooding, the United Methodist Church in Mozambique appointed a disaster response coordinator who has received UMCOR training and continues to work closely with UMCOR staff. The newly formed disaster response network in Mozambique is responding to the latest flooding by delivering food, tents, netting and other relief items to the affected areas. Recovery work from last year's flooding continues.
In Malawi, UMCOR's partner ACT (Action by Churches Together) is providing tents, blankets, and other relief items. A major concern in both countries is the spread of cholera. An UMCOR consultant is working with the Mississippi Annual Conference disaster response workers to assess the damage following the recent tornado and other severe storms in that state. Hundreds of homes have been destroyed or heavily damaged. United Methodists in the area are working with other churches to form an interfaith group to handle long-term recovery needs. The UMCOR Depot has shipped a container of personal hygiene, household, and baby supplies to the area.
