UMCOR is working with the Methodist Church in El Salvador, the Methodist Church of Puerto Rico, and ACT (Action by Churches Together, the relief and development arm of the World Council of Churches) to respond to those who have suffered from the earthquake in El Salvador.
UMCOR has sent initial emergency response grants, and a team of disaster response workers from UMCOR and the Methodist Church of Puerto Rico is traveling to El Salvador this weekend. They will work with the Methodist Church in El Salvador to assess damage, develop further relief and recovery plans and coordinate efforts with our ecumenical partners.
UMCOR funds provide immediate relief by supporting collective centers in Santa Tecla and San Salvador that are providing food, water, blankets and mattresses. A gift of $140.00 will provide an Emergency Assistance Support Package containing basic food and kitchen items, bedding, and tools. These packages will be distributed to several thousand families.
To respond to this emergency, please give to UMCOR Advance #511447 "El Salvador Earthquake." At this point UMCOR has not received requests to ship material resources for this emergency, however we anticipate that there will be a need for health kits. The UMCOR Depot needs to replenish its stock of health kits so we will be prepared to send them to El Salvador or other places when requested. For instructions on assembling and shipping health kits, please call the UMCOR Depot at (800) 814-8765 or visit the UMCOR website: http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/kits.html. If there is a request for additional material resources or volunteers in the coming weeks we will post that information here.
Gifts may be made through local United Methodist churches, or by calling 1-800-554-8583. Credit card donations are accepted. (Read more about how you can help UMCOR's emergency responses.)
Please pray for those whose who have lost loved ones, homes and belongings in this disaster.
