The UMCOR Hotline

April 18, 2006

In Today's Hotline:

Global: Fair Trade, Good for Recovery
Niger: Diminishing Consequences of Famine
Philippines: UMCOR Responds in Recovery from Landslides
US: UMCOR Provides Emergency Grants in Five Storms

GLOBAL: FAIR TRADE, GOOD FOR RECOVERY

As Christians we can buy products that are fairly traded. We'll be supporting practices that help farmers in Latin America, Africa and Asia earn a fairer share of income. And we'll be participating in an act that is good for recovery from chronic poverty. Simply put, fair trade enables small farmers to sell their crops for a fair price. You can help in three ways! Celebrate this year’s Fair Trade Day on May 13 or on a Sunday near that date using our new bulletin insert. Consider signing up for the UMCOR Coffee Project--a delicious way to serve people in need while enjoying an excellent cup of coffee, tea, cocoa, or chocolate. Give generously to UMCOR Advance #982920, World Hunger and Poverty. Your gifts enable UMCOR to continue its work on behalf of United Methodists for fair trade--good for recovery because it brings better roads, better health, and better lives.

NIGER: DIMINISHING CONSEQUENCES OF FAMINE

Off-season gardening is one of the activities going on in Niger, thanks to United Methodist responses to an appeal for famine relief in Niger. UMCOR is participating in this and other long-term recovery efforts through its partners in the interfaith coalition, Action by Churches Together. Livestock management, grain bank repair, and other measures to protect the food-growing capacity of communities are among the initiatives. You can assure the continuation of this work through your gifts to UMCOR Advance #101250, All Africa Drought and Famine.

PHILIPPINES: UMCOR RESPONDS IN RECOVERY FROM LANDSLIDES

Two weeks of rainfall triggered massive landslides in February that buried school children, homes, and community buildings in Guinsaugon, a farming village in Southern Leyte province, under 120 feet of mud. UMCOR is responding through Action by Churches Together in relief assistance, agriculture, shelter assistance and food-for-work programs. Please pray for sisters and brothers in the Philippines and give to UMCOR Advance #982450, International Disaster Response, designate Philippines Landslide.

US: UMCOR PROVIDES EMERGENCY GRANTS IN FIVE STORMS

Violent storms and tornados rolled across multiple states in early April, killing 28 people and injuring dozens of others. UMCOR has sent grants to five of the affected annual conferences--Memphis, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Illinois Great Rivers--and continues to monitor reports of the disaster coordinators in those regions as well as others that suffered damage. To assist in a meaningful way, please give to UMCOR Advance #901670, Domestic Disaster Response.

UMCOR provides emergency relief in many areas of the world. To find out more about UMCOR's ministries, please visit umcor.org. You can donate to any project by placing a contribution in the offering plate at a local United Methodist church; by sending a check to UMCOR, PO Box 9068, New York, NY 10087-9068; or by calling 1-800-554-8583, where credit card donations are accepted. UMCOR is exempt from tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States and qualifies for the maximum charitable contribution deduction by donors.

And, please pray for those who are hungry, displaced, sick or in poverty because of these and other natural and human-made disasters, and for the workers who minister to them.
