KENYA: FAMINE RELIEF
Several failed rainy seasons have led to a food crisis in Kenya that has placed the country in a severe famine. This season’s rains are also predicted to either come too late or bring too little rain to improve the situation. The Kenyan Government is requesting assistance for 2.5 million people (about 10 percent of the population).
UMCOR is planning a two-pronged approach that addresses immediate needs and long term response through ACT International partners working in Kenya and through the Methodist Church in Kenya. You can take part in this response by giving to UMCOR Advance #101250, All Africa Famine Relief.
BURUNDI: KAYERO HEALTH CENTER
UMCOR works with United Methodists in Burundi to bring health and healing to some of the nation’s most vulnerable people. The newly-reconstructed Kayero Health Center serves many people each day who were left without resources following a protracted war. Many of the patients are unable to pay for the center’s services. The Kayero Health Center cares for anyone in need regardless of their ability to pay.
Kayero Health Center is still in need of repairs, medical equipment, and refurbished buildings reserved for staff housing. Please give to UMCOR Advance #982450, International Disaster Response to support this and many other efforts that support some of the world’s most vulnerable people.
GEORGIA: UMCOR RECOGNIZED BY US EMBASSY
A few weeks ago the UMCOR Hotline reported on how UMCOR Georgia was providing blankets and other necessities to internally displaced people who were suffering in the extreme winter weather.
The US Embassy in Georgia recognized the efficient organization and quick response in the effort led by UMCOR Georgia which served 20,000 vulnerable displaced people living in temporary centers in western Georgia. Read more at the US Embassy in Georgia's website. Help this good work to continue by giving to UMCOR Advance #250305, Georgia Emergency.
UMCOR: ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING
One Great Hour of Sharing Sunday is March 26. OGHS makes all of the other UMCOR programs possible because it funds the cost of doing business for UMCOR. Any gifts that are over and above UMCOR’s administrative costs go to where they are most needed. Often they support under-funded programs.
It’s not too late to order your OGHS envelopes, posters, refrigerator magnets and offering boxes. Call 1-888-346-3862 to order and visit UMCOR’s OGHS website for more information. Check out this year’s worship resources to help you prepare and celebrate this Special Sunday.
UMCOR provides emergency relief in many areas of the world. To find out
more about UMCOR's ministries, please visit umcor.org. You can donate to any project by placing a contribution in the offering plate at a local United Methodist church; by sending a check to UMCOR, PO Box 9068, New York, NY 10087-9068; or by calling 1-800-554-8583, where credit card donations are accepted. UMCOR is exempt from tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States and qualifies for the maximum charitable contribution deduction by donors.
And, please pray for those who are hungry, displaced, sick or in poverty because of these and other natural and human-made disasters, and for the workers who minister to them.
