Sierra Leone: Long-Term Flood Response
US: Hurricane Katrina
UMCOR: One Great Hour of Sharing

GEORGIA: WINTER WARMTH

Extreme winter weather in Western Georgia has left 20,000 displaced people living in temporary accommodations exceptionally vulnerable and without basic items to combat the cold. UMCOR Georgia is helping through their emergency winterization program, providing blankets and other necessities to help these vulnerable people make it through the harsh winter months. At the request of the US Department of State, UMCOR Georgia is coordinating the efforts of all Department of State grantees in the country.

Give to UMCOR Advance #250305, Georgia Emergency, to support UMCOR Georgia’s efforts.

SIERRA LEONE: LONG-TERM FLOOD RESPONSE

Severe flooding last fall destroyed the homes and livelihoods of many in Sierra Leone. UMCOR sent an emergency grant at that time to help the United Methodist Church of Sierra Leone provide relief to communities there. They not only provided for immediate relief, they also helped families return to their pre-flood livelihood by providing boats and nets for fishing. This opened the doors to organizing fishing societies to help maximize their gains. Additionally, they helped a group of 12 women set up markets so they could sell their wares.

UMC Sierra Leone now plans to expand these programs to provide for long-term recovery. Their aim is to enable communities to become self-sufficient, paying particular attention to children, elderly persons, and other vulnerable groups.

Your gifts to UMCOR Advance #982450, International Disaster Response, help support the full recovery of people in Sierra Leone and around the world.

US: HURRICANE KATRINA

By the end of 2005, United Methodists and others had contributed more than $62 million for hurricane relief and rehabilitation. “The compassion of the United Methodist people for those in crisis appears to be unlimited,” said the Rev. Paul Dirdak, UMCOR’s top executive.

UMCOR is working in partnership with five annual conferences to not only bring immediate relief but also to assist the most vulnerable survivors for years to come. Read how UMCOR is putting your dollars to good use in Louisiana and Mississippi in UMCOR’s latest Report to Donors: Miracles One Household at a Time.

Support the ongoing hurricane recovery efforts by giving to UMCOR Advance #982523, Hurricanes 2005. If you would like your gift to go to a specific hurricane or region, please note that in the memo line of your check.
