PAKISTAN/KASHMIR: EARTHQUAKE RELIEF CONTINUES
The rush to provide relief to earthquake-affected areas in South Asia continues. UMCOR Partners such as Church World Service, International Blue Crescent, Church's Auxiliary for Social Action, and others are giving assistance in the form of shelter, food, and medical care. October’s quake continues to take its toll as survivors suffer from disease and exposure to the Himalayan winter. The UMCOR Disaster Response network is hard at work helping the survivors of Rita to recover their homes and livelihoods through the annual conferences. In the Texas Annual Conference Rita recovery is well underway with 126 volunteer teams arriving to assist in relief and recovery between October and the end of 2005. Many more teams are scheduled in 2006. Family advocates and others are undergoing training to help people not only repair their homes, but also their lives. One Rita survivor recently sent UMCOR a word of thanks, “Thank you for all the help down here in Southwest La.
