SIERRA LEONE: COMMUNITY-BASED HEALTH CARE

United Methodists in Africa made several strides towards improving health care through a workshop held in Sierra Leone, December 5-10. The workshop focused on malaria, HIV/AIDS and community-based health care methods. Participants from United Methodist health care centers in six African countries participated in this workshop.

This gathering was the launching pad for the United Methodist Community-Based Malaria Control program which will begin at the United Methodist Health and Maternity Center, Kissy, Sierra Leone. The program will then be replicated throughout Africa over the next three years to bring this preventable and deadly disease under control.

ZIMBABWE: FEEDING THE HUNGRY

Poor rains and recent evictions have caused millions in Zimbabwe to go hungry. The World Food Program estimates that nearly one-third of the population is likely to face severe food shortages in the coming months.

UMCOR has been providing relief in Zimbabwe through local partner organizations already operating in the country. Now, even more assistance is required to bridge the gap in the food supply. UMCOR partners Christian Care and Lutheran Development Services are distributing food, drought resistant seeds, and protein-enriched food to children, pregnant women, and people who are sick.

LIBERIA: FIELDS RIPE WITH HOPE

Investing in people and their knowledge is the basis of UMCOR’s Sustainable Agriculture and Development program. This program supports efforts like the Farmer Field School which introduces local farmers to new agricultural techniques and new crops. The moringa tree is one of the new crops trainers have introduced in several African nations. The tree grows quickly and has incredible nutritional value. Growing moringa can not only mean better health for the farmer’s family, it can also mean a healthier community and improved income.
