WORLDWIDE: RESPONDING TO INTERNATIONAL DISASTERS As the number of fatalities from October's South Asia earthquake continues to rise and winter weather sets in, relief efforts become more frantic. UMCOR partner Church World Service continues to bring relief in the form of shelter kits and food. Help support this lifesaving effort by giving to UMCOR Advance #232000, Pakistan Earthquake. Rains from Hurricanes Stan, Wilma as well as additional tropical storms in October triggered mudslides in Central America. Indigenous people groups were primarily affected as their homes and farms tend to be in the mountainous villages that were washed away. UMCOR is providing relief and support over the long term through local partners in Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador, and Honduras. Your gifts to UMCOR Advance #501300, Central American Emergency, give hope to those who lost so much. US: HURRICANE RECOVERY CONTINUES UMCOR is preparing workers to assist communities over the long term. In a disaster of this magnitude survivors are often unaware of their rights and the kinds of assistance available to them. A caring volunteer can connect them. Currently, UMCOR personnel are conducting ecumenical training in Mississippi for these workers. They will help individuals and families get the assistance they need and to develop their own plan for recovery. Pastors working in hurricane affected areas are also receiving relief in the form of respite care. Qualified volunteers are providing much-needed relief and rest by temporarily taking on the pastor’s responsibilities so clergypersons can take a break and have a period of rest and renewal during this intense time. Give generously to UMCOR Advance #982523, Hurricanes 2005, and support ongoing relief efforts such as providing long-term assistance and respite for clergy.
