PAKISTAN: SHELTER FOR THE HOMELESS Relief efforts continue in Pakistan through UMCOR partners, Church World Service (CWS) and International Blue Crescent. Poor weather and inaccessible villages have hampered some responses; however with the help of helicopters and creativity both organizations are assisting thousands of survivors. An estimated 2.5 million people were left homeless by the earthquake. They are facing a long and harsh winter with few resources and little to no shelter. Reports from the area state that shelter and medical care are the most urgent need for survivors, ranking above food and clothing. One way CWS is assisting people in remote areas is through airdrops of shelter kits. These kits give survivors warm blankets and winterized tents just as the bitter Himilayan winter arrives. Snow has already started to fall in some areas of Kashmir. Please give generously to provide for immediate and long term recovery from this devastating earthquake, UMCOR Advance #232000, Pakistan Earthquake. US: CRUISE SHIP CASE WORK FEMA invited UMCOR to train case managers to assist 1,500 Katrina evacuees living on the Carnival “Fun Ship,” Holiday docked in Pascagoula, MS. UMCOR deployed Rick Hill, director, family assistance ministries, MERCI (Marion Edwards Recovery Center Initiative) in North Carolina to conduct the training on board the ship. While onboard ship he trained a staff to manage cases which will help survivors develop their own recovery plan and move off the ship into a more independent living situation. Mr. Hill sees the training as a success, saying “With all that is in place, this program can be nothing but successful.” Gifts to UMCOR Advance #982523, Hurricanes 2005 - Katrina, will help thousands of people recover their lives and homes following Hurricane Katrina. WORLDWIDE: INTERNATIONAL DISASTER RESPONSE Year after year UMCOR’s greatest need is for funds that aid international disaster response. While some disasters are popular in the media, which raises awareness and funding to assist in recovery, others go unheralded and therefore without the same resources to recover and rebuild. Media coverage or not, UMCOR responds and dispatches much-needed funding to relieve the immense human suffering that can occur in the wake of natural and human-caused disasters. Generous donations to UMCOR Advance #982450, International Disaster Response, allow UMCOR to immediately respond to human need in all corners of the globe.
