The UMCOR Hotline

August 23, 2005

In Today's Hotline:
Worldwide: Medicine Boxes Save Lives
Nigeria: Clean Water, Healthy Lives
Afghanistan: Helping Refugees Return Home
Africa: All Africa Famine Relief
Resources: Hospital of Hope Bulletin Insert

WORLDWIDE: MEDICINE BOXES SAVE LIVES

“This Medicine Box will serve many people who would not be able to get medicine otherwise,” said a Medicine Box recipient in Angola. A Medicine Box ® contains 18 essential drugs and medical supplies-enough to treat illnesses and injuries in a population of 1,000 for three months. Medicine Boxes have proven to be of critical value from urban hospitals to rural and community health centers.

UMCOR’s stock of Medicine Boxes is running low! You can send a lifesaving gift to UMCOR Advance #982630, Medicine Box. The cost of one medicine box is $425.

NIGERIA: CLEAN WATER, HEALTHY LIVES

Clean drinking water is scarce in many areas in Nigeria. A United Methodist in Sabon-Gida approached UMCOR about making a difference for his neighbors. As a result of his efforts, UMCOR is drilling two bore holes that would give the community access to clean drinking water for the first time. Currently, women in this area have to walk three miles to bring water for their families and livestock. These bore holes will not only significantly increase the quality of life for these women, but for their families as well.

Your gifts will support this effort to bring clean water and good health to Sabon-Gida, Nigeria. Please give to UMCOR Advance #982450, International Disaster Response.

AFGHANISTAN: HELPING REFUGEES RETURN HOME

Refugee families returning home to Paktya Province, in southeastern Afghanistan, are receiving much-needed help to rebuild their homes and their lives. UMCOR Afghanistan assisted 500 families by providing them with the materials and resources they need to build new homes.

For some, this construction is more difficult than others. Fatima is a widow who lives with her three children. While she was happy to have the opportunity to receive the materials to build a home, she recognized her lack of resources because of her small family. When she received her kit of materials she said, “If I do not receive help with building my shelter, you better take the toolkit back. I am grateful for the assistance UMCOR gives me, but I cannot build the shelter.” UMCOR responded by hiring someone to help her build so she and her children can have their own home.

Help many more people return home and rebuild their lives by giving to UMCOR Advance #602225, Afghanistan Emergency.

AFRICA: ALL AFRICA FAMINE RELIEF

Every 30 seconds an African child dies of hunger. UMCOR is working to relieve the suffering caused by droughts and famines throughout Africa either through UMCOR field offices in places such as Sudan, or through partner organization such as HEKS in Niger. UMCOR has also provided a grant to assist with efforts to tackle rural poverty in Zimbabwe through nutrition programs, food distribution and self-supporting activities such as gardening.

You can help save lives by giving to UMCOR Advance #101250, All Africa Drought and Famine Relief.

RESOURCES: HOSPITAL OF HOPE BULLETIN INSERT

Through the Hospital Revitalization Program hospitals in Africa and Asia improve their care and effectiveness in the community. Learn how the Nyadire United Methodist Hospital in Zimbabwe saved the life of one young boy in this bulletin insert, "Zimbabwe: A Hospital of Hope."
