INDIA: 15,000 FAMILIES WILL BENEFIT IN UMCOR FLOOD RESPONSE
UMCOR and Churches Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) will partner in the Mumbai region of India to deliver emergency aid to 15,000 flood-stricken families. Local churches, such as the Methodist Church of India, are assisting with distribution of food, fresh water, kitchen utensils, sleeping mats, and educational materials around the financial capital. The heaviest rains in recorded Indian history —37 inches in one day—halted road, rail and air traffic in Mumbai, forced schools to close, and displaced thousands of people. Hundreds more have died of electrocution by downed wires in the flooded streets.
Your prayers and gifts to UMCOR Advance #982450, International Disaster Response, India Floods, will assist in a meaningful way.
NIGER: SYSTEMIC WOES HEIGHTEN FAMINE DISASTER Malnutrition is the outward symptom of problems faced by Niger, according to observers familiar with the second poorest nation in the world. Lack of drinking water, inadequate sanitation, poor health care, and the high prevalence of malaria are systemic woes that intensify the disaster. More than 150,000 children may die as a result of starvation. UMCOR is participating in an alliance of ecumenical aid agencies to provide emergency relief to 55 stricken villages.
UMCOR's partner is Swiss Interchurch Aid, known as HEKS, which has long-term commitments in Niger. HEKS and UMCOR are delivering seeds, cattle fodder, and staple foods, such as milk powder, in the southern region of the country. The crisis in Niger is acute.
Please give today to UMCOR Advance #101250, All Africa Drought and Famine, Niger. Thank you for keeping this Advance alive!
YOUNG HUMANITARIANS: PRESCHOOLERS MODEL THE WAY
In Granger, Ind., New Salem United Methodist preschool children decided that all children are "Handmade by God" —and raised $1,300 to donate to three international United Methodist programs that benefit children. UMCOR gratefully received their contributions to buy a half-kilo of moringa seed and training to improve the diet and income of a farm family in Africa (UMCOR Advance #982188, Sustainable Agriculture and Development), immunize a child against diseases like tuberculosis (Advance #982400, Childhood Immunization), and to provide hot meals to school children through the Haiti Hot Lunch Program (Advance #418790). UMCOR is grateful for these young humanitarians, who show the rest of us the way of Jesus! Why not let them inspire a gift from you?
URGENT CALL: MEDICINE BOXES TOP UMCOR's WISH LIST
"The drugs that you have sent us are literally lifesaving." This praise from a hospital staff member in Malawi sums up the effectiveness of the Medicine Box program. Many clinics in remote areas do not have enough quality medicines and supplies. A typical Medicine Box® contains 18 essential drugs and medical supplies —enough to treat illnesses and injuries in a population of about 1,000 people for three months. These are basic medicines and supplies needed for day-to-day care of the common ailments that plague babies, children, their mothers, and adults of all ages.
You can help! Please donate the entire cost of a Medicine Box for $425 each or assemble the over-the-counter portion and make a cash gift for the prescription portion for $375. Thank you for the lifesaving gift of quality medicines through your contribution to UMCOR Advance #982630, Medicine Box.
