The UMCOR HotlineMay 24, 2005 United States: Volunteers Wanted as Hurricane Recovery Continues Recovery efforts in these areas remain in full-swing and they need your help. Want to volunteer to help disaster survivors? Learn how. E-mail Mission Volunteers, voluntrs@gbgm-umc.org, for contact information. You'll receive the names of your United Methodist Volunteers in Mission jurisdictional and conference coordinators in response. They will provide all you need to know about creating and training a team as well as scheduling details. Looking for information on what disaster sites need volunteers? Call the Volunteer Hotline at 1-800-918-3100. Even after six months of reconstruction, much more work is needed to restore these communities. You can contribute financially to the continued recovery by giving to Advance #982410, Hurricanes 2004. Zimbabwe: To Buy Seed Is a Sign of Hope Recently elected to his post as leader of the 230 circuits and 130,000 United Methodists in Zimbabwe, Bishop Nhiwatiwa is working with community leaders to organize the response to the threats posed by limited water and sparse crops. For him the church has a ministry in its sustaining the community in its efforts to cope. During a visit this month to the United States, he reflected on the message in the scripture about the ravens feeding Elijah. "Even creation around you knows that you need food," he said. The Zimbabwe church is a member of a local nongovernmental organization, Christian Care. UMCOR provided a grant to Christian Care to assist with its efforts to tackle rural poverty in Zimbabwe through nutrition programs, food distribution, and self-supporting activities such as gardening. The Bishop's message to the church in the United States is "Thank you." In Zimbabwe, people know "the church has not abandoned them," he said. Your prayers and your gifts of money are critical to ongoing needs in the face of drought and famine. Please contribute generously to UMCOR Advance #101250, All Africa Famine. Central America: Hurricane Adrian Leaves its Mark United Methodists volunteered countless hours to rebuild homes in El Salvador following the 2001 earthquakes and in Nicaragua and Honduras following Hurricane Mitch in 1998. This history has formed strong ties United Methodists and the people in Central America. UMCOR continues to monitor the situation in Central America and is assessing needs for potential work. Your gift to UMCOR Advance #982523, Hurricanes 2005 Global, can help repair damage from this season's first hurricane. UMCOR provides emergency relief in many areas of the world. To find out more about UMCOR's ministries, please visit umcor.org. Since 2002, the specter of famine has prowled alongside a life-threatening drought across much of southern Africa: Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. This farmer in Lisutu, Zambia lost his corn crop because of the drought.
