Philippines: Flash Floods Compound Typhoon Damage New floods and landslides in the Philippines this week have killed over 300 people in the northern part of the nation. UMCOR sent grants to two episcopal areas there to support recovery efforts from two typhoons that occurred earlier this season. More assistance will be needed. Your generous contribution to UMCOR Advance #240235, Philippines Emergency will help in a meaningful way.
World AIDS Day: Kissy Clinic Worker Educates Through Needlework In Freetown, Sierra Leone, Sally Morris climbs aboard a poda-poda (a mini bus). After finding a seat, she opens her needlework bag and begins beading a red ribbon, one of the "Friends" pins Kissy Clinic sells to raise funds for its AIDS awareness program. Sally is a United Methodist missionary, and she talks to the curious passengers who often ask what she is making. Her ride home takes up to two hours-- so spontaneous AIDS education opportunities abound! She encourages people to ask questions and voice their concerns about the disease. Many times the conversations lead to a passenger's visit to the clinic for confidential counseling. World AIDS Day is December 1. Generosity to one of the HIV/AIDS Advances will offer hope to people with AIDS and their families. Please give to UMCOR Advance #982842 to provide assistance to children whose parents have died of AIDS. Or visit online to see other opportunities for supporting AIDS ministries.
Alternative Giving: More UMCOR Christmas Wishes This holiday season, UMCOR wishes for a Christmas that truly honors the birth of Jesus and shows concern for the whole family of God. Remember God's greatest gift by giving to others in Christ's name. Here are a few ideas for alternative gifts. You'll feel good when you give a gift of love that extends your hand and heart to others. For $20 you can help a refugee return home or find safety in a new location (UMCOR Advance #982540). Your $30 gift will help ship blankets, medical supplies, and hygiene articles, where they are needed most (UMCOR Advance #982730). Or, for $60, you can build a beehive and train a Liberian farmer in beekeeping techniques (UMCOR Advance #982920). Visit UMCOR's web site to see other ideas.
Cuba: Households Headed by Women Will Be Focus of Aid UMCOR will partner with Action by Churches Together, an international alliance of faith-based humanitarian groups, to provide hurricane recovery assistance in Cuba. Families to receive assistance will be the most vulnerable-- children, households headed by women, the chronically ill, and disabled persons. Last August, Hurricane Charley thrashed Cuba, destroying thousands of acres of crops and more than 8,000 homes. Another 41,000 homes sustained wind and water damage. Working through the Cuban Council of Churches, ACT will replace basic household items lost in the storm, distribute building supplies, and simply offer the comfort of an attentive ear. Your gift to UMCOR Advance #982410, Hurricanes 2004, will ensure that UMCOR can continue to respond to hurricane recovery.
