Burundi: Hospital Renovations Planned
When civil war broke out in Rutana Province, southeastern Burundi, builders were putting the finishing touches on the new hospital in Kayero. Construction halted and looters tore through the new building. In a short time, they destroyed or stole electrical cables, doors, windows, and mosquito screens. Now The United Methodist Church of Burundi has mobilized Kayero residents to contribute to the renovation of the facility. Contributors are donating sand, stones and other construction materials. Together with the local government, the church's goal is to provide much needed medical services to people of the region. Planned are hygiene classes and HIV/AIDS education. Your gifts to UMCOR Advance #982450, International Disaster Response, help to fund projects such as the Kayero Hospital rehabilitation. This Advance also allows United Methodists to support programs in parts of the world that have disappeared from the headlines.
Kosovo: 3,000 People Displaced
More than 3,000 ethnic minority women, men, and children have fled their homes to temporary camps at area military bases due to recent outbreaks of violence in Kosovo. UMCOR is making every effort to ensure that beneficiaries of the agency's past minority returns programs are located and receive appropriate assistance now. UMCOR workers in Serbia are monitoring the situation of beneficiaries who may have fled to Serbia and Montenegro. Your generous gift to UMCOR Advance #333405, Kosovo Emergency, will help to assure that the most vulnerable people receive the assistance they need.
Haiti: Expanded Programs Deliver Hope
UMCOR has created a new bulletin insert about Haiti's civil crisis. Please download, print, and distribute it to every member of your congregation this Sunday. Take a minute for mission to talk about the Methodist Church of Haiti's expanded emphases on assisting families and children in this difficult time. Health care, spiritual care, school fees and hot lunches are the priorities. Or use the document as a resource for a sermon on Matthew 14:15-21; Mark 6:35-44; or Luke 9:12-17. Encourage healing in Haiti by encouraging generous gifts to UMCOR Advance #418325, Haiti Civil Emergency, and to UMCOR Advance #418790, School Hot Lunch Program.
