The UMCOR Hotline

October 11, 2002: Recovery from Hurricane Isidore continues in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. UMCOR has sent medicine boxes and health kits. Emergency food has been distributed and homes are being rebuilt. This ongoing response prompts these requests: financial gifts to replenish UMCOR's Hurricanes 2002, Advance #901185-6, medicine boxes, and health kits. Information about the kits is available on UMCOR's website or by phone at 1-800-554-8583. Information about the The Medicine Box® program is available at http://gbgm-umc.org/health/medbox/, where you can request a free instructional packet.

United Methodists are involved in the three areas recovering from the recent tornado that struck in the vicinity of Indianapolis, Indiana. UMCOR has sent a $10,000 grant. Case management is beginning. Please continue to support the Domestic Disaster Response Advance #901670-1 so that UMCOR can respond quickly to emergencies such as this one.

In response to the conflict in Cote d'Ivoire, UMCOR is sending medicine boxes to the autonomous Methodist Church in that country. This Methodist body is in the process of joining the global United Methodist Church family. Financial support must come from the International Disaster Response Advance #982450-8. Your gifts are urgently needed.

Assessment continues in Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Lili. UMCOR, in concert with the Louisiana Annual Conference, has one volunteer and one staff person on-site. Hardest hit was the Dulac area, where 3000 homes were flooded. This area had also been hit by Hurricane Andrew. The Sager Brown Depot is being used as a service center for the American Red Cross. It is also now a center for volunteers who are cleaning up after the storm, including the Sager Brown campus itself. Flood buckets filled with cleaning and other supplies have been delivered to communities in the affected area. An initial grant will be sent. Your continued support of the Domestic Disaster Response Advance #901670-1 is requested. Flood buckets are also needed. Detailed instructions are available on the web at http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/kits.cfm or by phone at 1-800-554-8583.

Money has been sent to two areas recovering from last summer's fires: the Heber-Overgaard area in Arizona and the Angeles National Forest area of Southern California. Please help replenish the Domestic Disaster Response Advance #901670-1.

The devastating human toll caused by the famine in Southern Africa is astounding. We are grateful for the help your contributions have made possible. Please continue to support this response by giving to the Church-wide Appeal for Southern Africa Famine, Advance #101250-4.

Gifts may be made through local United Methodist churches, or by calling 1-800-554-8583. Credit card donations are accepted. (Read more about how you can help UMCOR's emergency responses.)

UMCOR is providing emergency relief in many areas of the world. To find out more about current UMCOR ministries, please visit the website: http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/ .

And, please pray for those who are hungry, displaced, sick or in poverty because of these and other natural and human-made disasters, and for the workers who minister to them.
