The UMCOR Hotline

April 12, 2002: There is a critical need for medical care for Palestinians. UMCOR is providing funds to the Augusta Victoria Hospital in Jerusalem for medicine and supplies. There is a particular need to serve additional dialysis patients who are coming to the hospital because they cannot travel to any other medical facility. UMCOR is also supporting the efforts of Bethlehem Bible College to provide medical assistance and other humanitarian aid. UMCOR mourns with both Palestinians and Israelis over the increasing incidence of death and violence. We recognize that while all people in the Middle East-- Jews, Muslims, and Christians-- are living in fear of terrorism, Palestinians have the least access to life sustaining resources. Please give to UMCOR's Middle East Emergency, Advance #601740-2 so that UMCOR may continue to provide humanitarian assistance, and please offer your earnest prayers for peace.

UMCOR is working with the United Methodist Church and ecumenical partners in Southern African countries, particularly Malawi and Zimbabwe, to provide emergency food relief for people suffering from famine. More than four million people are affected. Already, older people and small children are dying, and without significant food assistance there will be mass starvation. Please give to Africa Famine Relief, Advance #101250-4 to help provide emergency food assistance.

In the wake of the recent peace treaty signing in Angola, displaced people are returning to their homes. They will need considerable assistance in resettling and starting over again. Please give generously to UMCOR's Angola War Recovery, Advance #105720-5.

In the United States, recovery work from recent flooding continues in the Kentucky and Holston Conferences. UMCOR has just sent a grant to the Missouri area to assist with the ongoing recovery from ice-storms last January. Please give to UMCOR Domestic Disaster Response, Advance #901670-1. Volunteer teams will be needed for flood recovery work. For more information please call the Volunteer Line (800) 918-3100.

Gifts may be made through local United Methodist churches, or by calling 1-800-554-8583. Credit card donations are accepted. (Read more about how you can help UMCOR's emergency responses.)

UMCOR is providing emergency relief in many areas of the world. To find out more about current UMCOR ministries, please visit the website: http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/ .

And, please pray for those who are hungry, displaced, sick or in poverty because of these and other natural and human-made disasters, and for the workers who minister to them.
