  • "Holy Grounds" is both a business and ministry that involves an alternative high school and the Sunnyside UMC in Washington. The espresso business is housed in the church teaching mostly Hispanic students on the job training and business development skills while they raise funds for mission projects in Mexico and locally. Holy Grounds is part of the outreach and reconciling ministry that the church is doing with youth in a community where the tension between Hispanic and non-Hispanics has led to open conflict and intervention by the National Guard. Jerry Goebel serves as the youth director and sponsor of Holy Grounds.

Goebel explains that "these kids are all really nice kids, but some people in the community tend to see them from a distance." Goebel says that these youth are learning that they have value and potential and are important to God. The program is building bridges with the community, for it has led other churches and businesses to offer donations and assistance in this ministry.

  • 56 Volunteers, Youth/Adults from Cincinnati traveled this summer to learn and visit Oregon and to repair and paint the facilities of "Casa Metodista" in Woodburn, where ministry with Hispanics is going on.
