Hate Crime Data Collection Project

United Methodists are making a difference by watching and listening for evidence of hate and violence. You can be a data collector helping track hate crimes and violence nationwide for the General Board of Global Ministries, Women's Division, and Ministries in the Midst of Hate & Violence.

Accompanying resource sheets provide information about tracking newspaper clippings and information on your local media. Please keep in mind that we have begun to notice a new trend. We know that hate crimes are underreported, but additionally it now seems that when reported, often such incidents are only mentioned on radio or television spots without getting into local newspapers. So, we need you to go beyond clipping news articles.

If you hear on the radio or see on the nightly news, stories which fit the pattern of hate, please make a note of the date, station, time, name of program, channel, city and state. Make notes about what is reported. Send that information to us. Then, if there are any additional details needed, we can call the station and ask questions. And, when clipping, please include the name of the newspaper, the city, state and date, preferably cutting the masthead of the paper containing all of that information, but please add the state.

Folks all over the country are sending in articles and reports, but without a state identification or a return address, it is difficult to know the state you are mailing from. Please be sure to include your name and address so we know who our trackers are.

As the project expands, as more and more United Methodists and other faith groups have joined the effort, we are learning more and more about hate crimes about which we would otherwise have no information.

We have made arrangements with the Atlanta based Center for Democratic Renewal (CDR), which has tracked white supremacy activities and other hate groups for over 20 years, to include the United Methodist data which you are collecting, into their national data base. In turn, CDR will provide reports back for our United Methodist and others who are participating. That means, that you will soon receive information that includes the data you tracked.

This is an important ministry and we remain grateful for your cooperation and commitment. This project would not be possible without you!
