"If we are ready to welcome, ready to listen, and ready to learn from youth as well as teach them, this issue New World Outlook provides a host of ideas and models, and a wealth of resources," notes Alma Graham in the Editor's Column for the September-October issue.
New World Outlook looks at how The United Methodist Church ministers to young people and enables young people to minister to others.
WHAT'S IN THIS ISSUE:
No longer a steppingstone to "real ministry," youth ministry has become the career of choice for some full-time ordained and lay pastors. Associate Editor Christie R. House interviews a number of youth workers to find out how they view God's call to work with and for young people.
What do college-aged young adults think of The United Methodist Church? Is the church serving their needs? "I got this big faith kick in high school," reports one young woman. "Then the church dropped me when I went to college." Cheryl Hemmerle helps New World Outlook's readers hear what college-aged women are saying to the church.
Together We Move Mountains: Young People and the Church
The 1996 General Conference established the Shared Mission Focus on Young People as a global initiative to challenge the denomination to focus on the needs of youth and young adults. Linda Bales, director of the Shared Mission Focus on Young People, reports on how the initiative helps churches enable young people to become full participants in the church's life and work.
Looking for resources to reach the young people in your church? Steven Games, formerly the senior editor for Youth Resources at the United Methodist Publishing House, writes about the hottest-selling youth resources. The demand for resources is the greater than ever, and the Publishing House works hard to keep up.

Adventures of a Missionary Kid in Africa

Now that she and her family are back in the United States, Emily updated us on what it was like to live and go to school in Lubumbashi. Douglas and Elizabeth Gipe, her parents, are Missionaries in Residence at the General Board of Global Ministries in New York.
Empowering the Young Women of India
Dr. J. S. Murthy, our colleague from Jabalpur, India, traveled to the Calcutta/Asanol region and reports on how mission schools established by the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society continue to fulfil their mandates today, as missions of the Methodist Church of India. These pioneer institutions continue to educate the poor and marginalized children of the indigenous Santhal people of the Pakur district.

Reaching Out in Christian Mission: Hinton Rural Life Center
Associate Editor Christie R. House had to go to the hospital in Clay County, North Carolina, to get this interview with Clay Smith, director of the Hinton Rural Life Center. (He's fully recovered now and back on the job!) In this beautiful area, where everyone knows everyone, opportunities for ministry still abound and the Hinton Center answers the call in its service to small-membership churches.
