On March 26, 1996, the Gay's Hill Baptist Church in Millen, Georgia, was burned to the ground in an act of hate.

In July of 1997, the new Gay's Hill Baptist Church was dedicated, rebuilt with the help of many partners, including United Methodist work teams from across the country, and grants from the National Council of Churches in the United States, the American Jewish Committee, and the National Association of Black Evangelicals, among other contributors.
