Communication form the Council of Bishops The United Methodist Church
To: the People of God called United
Methodists,
Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus
Christ, the Prince of Peace. We write you to
express our sorrow at the tremendous loss of life
and our horror at the violence of the attacks
that occurred in the United States today. “When
one suffers, all suffer together.” We suffer
today with those who lost loved ones, suffered
injuries, or experienced broken and bruised
spirits. As we watched with the world, we were
overwhelmed by feelings of shock, fear, anger,
and grief. We are stunned by calculated
disregard for human life and the violation of the
human community. We are concerned that some
people are already reacting with accusations of
blame, distrust of strangers, and cries for
retaliation. In this crisis moment for the United
States and the world, Christians are called to
bear witness to the biblical promise of peace
that passes all understanding. Every Christian
is called to make “peace-with-justice” a way of
life. This is yet another day of peace-making
for people who follow the Prince of Peace. Let
us pray for President Bush and other world
leaders as they respond to this crisis. The
council of Bishops of your church asks every
church to take three actions in support of peace
at this time. Open your church tonight and
tomorrow for prayer for wisdom, comfort and
healing. Encourage members and friends to donate
blood through your local blood bank as the gift
of life for those injured. Encourage
contributions to United Methodist Committee on
Relief (UMCOR), for Domestic Disaster Response
http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor-
hotline/cwsstatement.stm #901670-1. Gifts may be
made through local United Methodist Churches, or
by calling (800) 554-8583. Finally, we encourage
Christians everywhere to reach out and join hands
with leaders of all faith communities, to offer
private expressions of concern and to give public
witness to the possibility and the promise of
peace among the peoples of the world.
Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Lord have mercy.

I just want all of you that have been affected by
the recent tragedies to know that my love and

and how your lives are forever changed. I want
you to know that I am running the marathon in
January for children with Leukemia. I am also
running for those who have been so hurt yet so
courageous through this difficult time. I pray
with each step I take in the marathon that God
will begin to heal all the hearts that have been
broken through this tragedy. May God bless the

To All Grieving Americans
A New York minute reflecting against the sun’s
bright light; the shimmering silver of man in
flight; those going home, those traveling away,
had no idea of their plight that day. Young
mothers with children by their sides; men who had
just parted from their young brides; CEO’s with
briefcases full of programs and plans,
grandmothers, with sweet wrinkled hands. Evil
traveled with them that day, unbeknownst to them;
what began as a bright sunny day, so very quickly
became dark and grim. Some became aware of their
fate that day, those whom were desperately
calling to say; how much they cared, perhaps to
say goodbye; hopeless, helpless, nothing to try.
Thousands of lives in the towers that day;
comings and goings, in their usual way; in a
matter of minutes, everything changed, by
terrorists, murders, obviously deranged. The
planes shattered the towers, the steel ripped and
torn away; and precious lives not all that was
lost that day. Our security, our safely was
ripped and torn away just as the metal and glass
on that fateful day; unlike the towers that
crumbled so quickly away; Americans stand strong
and firm, yet today. Divided we fall? Unheard
of!! United we stand! With love and great courage
we shall defend this land. For those lives lost
on that terrible day; will not have been in vain,
will be the message relayed. God have mercy on us
all, in the days and weeks ahead, with you
traveling with us, we have nothing to dread. God
bless us all! God bless America! Connie Alexander

Dear friends, Greetings from Geneva!
The images of the tragic events in the US on 11
September is still filling our minds here in
Geneva. We have been thinking a lot about all of
you we know in the US and about the people that
are in deep sorrow after loosing someone close to
them. Please find attached a pastoral letter sent
to the churches in the US. Being an important
part of the leadership of the US churches I
wanted to ensure that it reaches you.
Yours in Christ, the Prince of Peace,

Dear Sirs,
We were horrified to hear about the inhuman act of
terrorist attack which had resulted in heavy loss
of human lives and properties in the U.S. It is a
terrible thing.
We pray to God that nothing like this ever happens
again. We also pray that the perpetrators behind
this evil be tracked down and brought to justice.
We send our profound sympathies to you all and to
the families of the countless members that must
have been killed and injured in this evil act of
attack to the U.S.
We pray that the abundant blessings of the Lord be
upon you all.
Yours,

Dear Friends,
We, like all the rest of you, really haven't the
words to express our shock
and sorrow at the terrible and tragic attacks in
the U. S. last week,
resulting in horrific loss of life. We just wanted
you to know that we are
thinking of, and praying for, all of you as well
as for the thousands of
families who are in mourning for a loved one
or worrying over someone who
was injured. We wanted you to know that your
Chilean brothers and sisters
are also lifting you up in prayer and
supplication. Two prayer services
were held in our church here at El Vergel, and
others were held in many of
the other churches in the area. We will
continue to pray that wise
decisions be made by U.S. and world leaders
in determining how to respond to
the attacks and to stop future ones. We love
you all.

During this time of grief and sorrow our payers
are for the United States of America, mainly for
all the people that have lost their dear ones,
and those that are suffering in the hospitals.
May this time allow many people seek the Lord as
they have never done before. May this time allow
human nature to recognize that only God can
comfort, cure and give strength in difficulties.
I appreciate so much your work with Volunteers
In Mission and the information you are sending us.
Through God's grace may we be instruments of
peace and hope.
Sincerely in Christ,
Dr.
