GBGM Offers Grants for Handicapped Access

New York City — The General Board of Global Ministries is offering incentive grants to 15 local United Methodist churches willing to make their facilities and activities accessible to persons with handicapping conditions. Each of the 15 churches chosen will receive $1,000. This one-time grant is available only to local United Methodist churches.

Grant proposals or requests must be postmarked no later than June 30. Awards will be made by September 30. A church must give evidence of satisfactory planning in which persons with disabilities participated, and show that the project is part of a larger access plan. Other requirements are financial need and evidence of congregational involvement.

Projects addressing the needs of physical (hearing, sight, mobility), mental or developmental disabilities will be considered. Also eligible are projects aimed at obtaining or developing church school and worship materials for children and adults who have mental or developmental disabilities, or for programmatic materials that heighten awareness of persons with disabilities and which break down attitudinal barriers toward them. Every effort will be made insure that recipients represent churches of various sizes and diverse membership in all jurisdictions and annual conferences and include a wide range of handicapping conditions.
