MUSOLE NAWEJ tells of his struggles
as a teacher in Tete, Mozambique. I was assigned to Tete as a teacher trainer, but was also asked to teach French because they needed an instructor in this area. At the Instituto Joao Somane, a United Methodist-related school, there are about 300 students. It functions at two levels with 6th-8th grades in the mornings and 9th-10th grades in the afternoon. The school is in a lamentable state. It lacks a library, language laboratory (for English and French) and materials for science classes. It has been necessary to borrow materials from government schools. Our school faces the threat of closure because of insufficient space and supplies. We need classroom and boarding space and have written a proposal to GBGM seeking assistance in this regard. I have taken a survey of the UMC in the area. People from the northern area do not participate in the UMC because of language barriers; people in the South preach in their language. It is difficult to start churches in rural districts because the people are unable to support a pastor. The people in the South are doing the best they can. It is hard to give hope to starving people when you too are struggling. Our church is known everywhere for its deeds, but believers themselves are in bad condition as are parishes. There is an [African] proverb that says "you cannot put meat in your neighbor's pot while in yours you keep bones" . . .. In Tete, the pastor survives because the school pays her as a teacher. Believers do not like to hear requests for money all the time. That is a reason for them to leave the church. Some complain and say the church likes money. It is difficult to cope with this situation. As the struggle continues, I thank God Almighty for His care, tenderness, and goodness in my life. Please pray for the church and mission work in Tete. |
