JOSEPH SINNAH stresses the need of assistance for orphans and vulnerable children in Zambia.

The impact of HIV/AIDS coupled with economic hardship in Zambia has broken down social structures that ensure care and protection of its children thereby exposing them to more frequent and grave violations of their rights.

The most devastating effect of this deadly disease is the loss of their parents and caregivers, leaving the children to face a childhood of pain, peril, neglect and prejudice in local communities. Every tenet of the "rights of the child" is violated, from the right to education, health and development, to protection from exploitation and harm.

The situation of these children is getting desperate as their numbers increase in the midst of economic hardship and lack of measures to contain the violations. . .. These violations cause physical and psychological damage . . .. Given the circumstances of the orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) attention must be given to actions that would ensure the restoration of their lost dignity and protect them from further violence and abuse.

The church is attempting to provide support to local communities and families, and give individual care to children that will ensure social reintegration and re-establish a sense of normalcy for the victims.
