Landmines
kill and maim long after hostilities have ended and
soldiers have gone home. Many countries signed a treaty
banning the use of landmines more than three years
ago. But rich, productive land that could grow food
and support communities lies unused, marked off as
danger-zones. Clearing landmines is dangerous, painstaking,
costly work, and new de-mining methods are desperately
needed.
In Mozambique,
one of the world’s most heavily mined countries,
the Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist
church is funding promising alternatives to traditional
methods of clearing mines.
