Last October, Kim Ferguson, 11, read an article about the struggles of children in Africa, including those living with AIDS. "It made me sad," the sixth-grader says, "and I wanted to do something to help them."
A member of Clearfield Church, Eudora, Kan., Ferguson organized a fund-raising "Singspiration" with help from her then-pastor Shelly McNaughton-Lawrence. Ferguson spoke at her church and Wellsville (Kan.) Church and posted handmade flyers promoting the hymn-sing event. Days later, Ferguson welcomed members of the seven churches in her parish to the event. She explained to them why the children of Africa need help and provided a donation box and an informative display table there.
After an hour of singing and a presentation from a pastor who had visited Africa, Ferguson collected $500 in donations, which was given to the Advance, earmarked for the churchwide "Hope for the Children of Africa" campaign.
To donate, make your check payable to your local church, for Advancement project # 101000-4.
