From time to time, we receive requests for information on providing educational assistance for children, young adults or teachers. These requests are often difficult to answer. To be sure, they are needed. However, even among Methodist Schools, there are wide variances in the school's tuition. Add to this the reality that we (you and I) often forget the "other costs" associated with educating someone for a one year period of time. Among these other costs that we must understand and be prepared to address are the following: One, each student is required to have a school uniform. Two, each student is required to purchase their own learning materials (books, pencils, rulers, etc.) Three, each student may need some form of transportation assistance. And, finally, the "other" expenses such as eye glasses, required entry level immunizations, etc., may add to a student's educational needs. To be fair to the process, it is easy to assume that a yearly tuition package may be three times the "tuition" that a school lists as "tuition". Please keep these "other" costs in mind as you inquire into providing educational opportunities.
Teacher Education - Teachers have the ability to receive an education to teach in Haiti by attending school at the Methodist Professional School at the Freres Campus located in Petion-Ville, Haiti. The tuition expenses are as follows: 2,000 Gourdes per month for 9 months = 18,000 Gourdes + 1,000 Gourdes for teaching materials + 1,000 Gourdes for miscellaneous expenses = Total Yearly Expense: 20,000 Gourdes. The current U.S. Exchange rate is $1.00 U.S. = 23.5 Gourdes. Teachers will receive education for 1, 2, or 3 years depending on their academic background.
Vocational Education - Through the professional school located on the Freres Campus, students are encouraged to enroll in Graphic Arts, Electricity, Welding and Metal Fabrication, Auto Mechanics or Plumbing. The tuition expenses are as follows: Registration U.S. $5.00 + Annual Curriculum and activity fees U.S. $45.00 + Monthly Tuition Fee U.S. $20.00 Students participate in the program are expected to be enrolled for a period of two years.
School Children - Methodist Schools - Tuition Only ranges from $35 U.S. per year up to several hundred U.S. per year. If you have a specific school that you wish to provide assistance, please contact the Circuit Superintendent that oversees the school that you wish to support.
To pay for educational assistance, you must make all checks payable to Eglise Methodiste d'Haiti. Then, draft a letter to indicate where you want the funds directed and if the check covers any "other" expenses. Finally, mail the letter and check to Eglise Methodist d'Haiti c/o President of EMH, P.O. Box 6, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, WI Or, if you are visiting Haiti, you may hand carry the check with you and have it delivered to the Church.
