Stephen Springer

The Rev. Stephen Springer is an Associate in Mission Service (AIMS) with the Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church assigned to the Red Bird Missionary Conference where he serves as pastor of Thousandsticks United Methodist Church.

Describing his ministry, Steve says “My wife Dianne and I live out the love of God in Christ to the best of our ability as we pastor our church and the surrounding community. We seek to draw all people we meet to His love as we serve them in His name.”

Steve has indeed witnessed God’s love moving through his ministry and into local lives. One tragic example involved a young couple who were struggling to cope with the loss of two of their three infant triplets. “Both parents and their family expressed that they felt the love of Christ through us as we comforted them in their period of loss and bereavement,” he recalls.

Another memorable experience was the Kentucky River baptism of a mother and her two adult sons. After their baptism, all three actively participate in the church and community ministries, including the Community Clothing Store, Steve notes.

Besides serving the needs of the local community, Steve provides leadership for Thousandsticks UMC’s missions program, which is active on local, national and international levels. During one recent year, the church sent mission teams to Alabama to help tornado victims, to Kenya to work at the Maua Methodist Hospital, and to the Cherokee Indian Reservation where members helped Native Americans cut and split firewood for the poor and the needy.

A native Chicagoan, Steve earned a BS in agriculture from Pennsylvania State University in 1965 and an MS degree in entomology from Virginia Polytechnic in Blacksburg, VA in 1968. He also studied law at Seton Hall University in Newark, NJ. Prior to his pastorate, which began in 1992, he taught biology to non-science majors at Essex County College in Newark. During that time he also served as a college administrator.

Steve and his wife Dianne–who also an AIMS missionary–have three married children: Sarita, Mark, and Chase, and four grandchildren. His mother is Helen T. Springer of Lakehurst, NJ, where she is a member of Lakehurst Presbyterian Church.
