Helen Sheperd

Helen Sheperd is a missionary with the Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church. Sent from the Missouri West Annual Conference, she is serving in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Prior to her assignment to Mongolia, Helen served in Seoul, Korea, from 1992-2001 as Director of Severance Hospice (home care program), a project of Yonsei University, College of Nursing. Her transfer was requested to help establish the United Methodist mission presence in Mongolia, with major focus on starting the hospice movement.

Since her arrival to Mongolia in 2002, Helen’s goals have undergone frequent change. Initially, establishing a BGM presence by obtaining property for the first mission center was a major task. Now, as a nurse, directing the Grace Hospice home care program and building relationships are her main functions. Plans for expansion of the hospice program have changed not only due to financial constraints, but also due to the need for focusing on improvement of the quality of care and the depth of faith of the staff working in hospice. Leadership development is also a main concern for future management of the program.

Helen spends time teaching preschoolers on Sunday morning, leads a weekly English Bible study for young women, and works with two senior citizen groups which meet at the two mission centers in Ulaanbaatar. She feels that teaching children while working with the elderly and dying is important in maintaining a healthy balance in her life.

Helen also coordinates the mission activities of the GBM in Mongolia, which means working closely with other BGM missionaries and the Area Financial Executive to support the activities of two mission centers, three worshipping congregations and numerous projects.

”Serving in Mongolia continues to be an exciting, challenging assignment fostering relationships and allowing for relationships and evangelism to be possible through providing health care,” Helen shares. She gives thanks to God for providing these experiences.

A native of Ann Arbor, MI, Helen holds a diploma in nursing from Bronson Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Kalamazoo, MI; a B.A. in Psychology from Park College in Parkville, MO; and a M.S. in Social Gerontology from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, MO.

Helen worked in hospice home care, psychiatric nursing and at a children’s home prior to her commissioning as a BGM missionary.
