Jane Kies is a missionary with The United Methodist Church teaching Intensive English to students from non-English countries at Africa University in Mutare, Zimbabwe, southern Africa.
Africa University is a United Methodist Church-related project and is being nurtured and funded by church members from all over the world. It is a consequence of the growth of United Methodism on the African continent and has its foundations in the history and legacy of the church. Africa University opened in March 1992 as the first private, international university in Zimbabwe.
Jane shares about her ministry, “As a Christian and a teacher, I pray I can play a part in training and equipping young people to carry out their particular ministries and use their gifts to serve God. I am so thankful for the opportunity to work with and learn from the students who come to learn English at Africa University each year. I’m also thankful for my training and experience, but believe that it is the love of Jesus working in and through me that enables me to carry out this task.”
Jane was born in Ndola, Zambia and grew up in southern Africa and England. After graduating from York University with a B.A. in Sociology and Education, she spent two years in Uganda as a volunteer with the Church Missionary Society, teaching in a rural secondary school. She then returned to England to earn certification in Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (T.E.S.O.L). After finishing, she taught English at Maun Secondary School in Botswana, where she also worked with the Art Club and the Scripture Union student group.
She took additional coursework in T.E.S.O.L at the University of California, Davis. While at Davis, she was active in the Davis UMC, serving on the Church and Society commission, leading singing for the youth Sunday school, and helping teach adult Sunday school. She also coordinated a pre-school group at the student family housing complex where she lived.
In 1994, Jane returned with her family to Africa. She lived and worked at Nyadire Mission in Zimbabwe, teaching English at the mission high school and working with women to establish a Sunday school for children at the Nyadire UM church.
Jane is married to Larry, also a United Methodist missionary assigned to Africa University. They have four children: Ben, Andrew Pule, Carly, and Michael.
