Brief Description of Ministry:
The prison ministry of Valdese First United Methodist Church consists of a Disciple I (Youth) Bible Study at Western Youth Institution in Morganton, NC in-place since 1998 with approx. 20 men per study(about 7 total studies to date). The study is led by four teams of two, three of which are married couples, that go on a rotating basis. The ministry has been expanded by the addition of a local Baptist Church (Enon Baptist Church) which is in the process of leading its second study and that also uses the team approach. Also every 3rd Sunday night we have a lay speaker at the Minimum Custody Unit of WYI for a worship service. We have also in the past sponsored/mentored one young man who was released from WYI in a program started by our church called the Exodus Team that is similar to the Faithful Friends program that has been developed by Disciple Bible Outreach Ministries of NC.
