Four DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Communication Awards go to NEW WORLD OUTLOOK

Staff members and contributors to NEW WORLD OUTLOOK: The Mission Magazine of The United Methodist Church, published by the General Board of Global Ministries, won four of the DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Communication Awards presented by the Religion Communicators Council in Chicago, Illinois, on March 31, 2000.

Alma Graham, Editor; Christie R. House, Associate Editor; Roger C. Sadler, Art Director; and Emily Grote, Layout/Design won a red ribboned DeRose Hinkhouse Memorial Award for the July-August and September-October 1999 issues of NEW WORLD OUTLOOK, which placed second in the National Magazines competition, earning an Award of Merit.

Awards of merit for writing and photography went to the General Board of Global Ministries' missionary-photojournalist Paul Jeffery for work published in NEW WORLD OUTLOOK. Jeffrey won a writing Award of Merit for Magazine Article, Single Article, recognizing his Vieques story, "A Puerto Rican Island's Fight for Freedom From Occupation," in the Sept.-Oct 1999 issue; and an Award of Merit for Photography, Color, Single Photo, for "Catholic nun holding the photo of a priest killed by death squads," which introduced his story, "Guatemala Struggles To Find Peace," in the July-Aug. 1999 issue.

Ruth Kurtz, NEW WORLD OUTLOOK's Advertising/Promotion Director, won a Certificate of Merit for Special Print Material for her stand-up, fold-out brochure for NEW WORLD OUTLOOK: "This magazine will take you places you've never been...."

The Associated Church Press (ACP) also presented its 1999 Awards in Chicago during the RCC 2000 Celebration. In a ceremony held on March 30, NEW WORLD OUTLOOK received two ACP Awards of Honorable Mention: one to Alma Graham and Christie R. House, editors, for the magazine's fulfillment of its Mission Statement; the other, to Alma Graham and Christie R. House, editors, and Roger C. Sadler and Emily Grote, artist/designers, for Theme Issue, Section, or Series: "Restorative Justice Worldwide," July-Aug. 1999.
