KITWE, ZAMBIA--"And a little child shall lead them."

For those gathered for the March 24 commissioning of the newest group of United Methodist "Missioners of Hope" one of the most poignant moments of the worship service came when Reagan Kalongo, age 13, led the congregation in a litany for the children of Africa.

Written especially for the service, the litany reflected hope for Africa's children through the redeeming love of Jesus Christ--even in the face of war, hunger, disease and homelessness.

Reagan, a member of the Ndeke United Methodist Church in Kitwe, sported a red Missioners of Hope t-shirt--with artwork depicting faces of children within an outline of the African continent--as he led the prayer.

The complete litany follows:

Leader:     For the many children in Burundi, Rwanda, Liberia, Angola, Mozambique, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Sierra Leone and other countries who have been affected by war, but now receive the glorious message of God's redeeming love, which brings new hope out of despair, resurrection out of defeat and new life out of death,

People:     Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader:     For Africa's children who are beginning to find new hope and to rebuild their lives,

People:     Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader:     For Africa's children who are aware that God is with them in spite of conditions of neglect, homelessness and death from diseases of all kinds,

People:     Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader:     For Africa's children who can now be assured of the love and hope of Jesus Christ given to children so that they may walk, talk, see, dance, jump and play like other children, in spite of warring conditions,

People:     Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader:     For Africa's children who stand to receive the hope of Christ through the love of the Missioners of Hope for the Children of Africa,

People:     Lord, hear our prayer.  Amen.
