Staff Changes at United Methodist Mission Board

Three deputy general secretaries have joined the staff of the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM), it was announced by Dr. Randolph Nugent, general secretary. The new staff executives, all of whom are members of the mission board cabinet, are the Rev. R. Randy Day, the Rev. Youngsook Charlene Kang, and the Rev. Edith Gleaves.

Photo of Randy Day. - 7077 BytesRandy Day is Deputy General Secretary for Evangelization and Church Growth and Community and Institutional Ministries. He is responsible for congregational development, including the provision of financial resources and services, and the administration of institutions and mission work within the various United Methodist constituencies.

Prior to joining the mission board staff Day was senior pastor at Nichols UMC in Trumbull, CT. He also has been a district superintendent in the New York Conference, pastor of Jesse Lee Memorial United Methodist Church in Ridgefield, CT, First United Methodist Church in Jamaica, NY and First and St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Astoria, and associate pastor of Golden Hill United Methodist Church in Bridgeport, CT. and First United Methodist Church in Chillicothe, IL.

Day has been a leader, facilitator, or participant in events throughout the church, including regional schools of mission, Bishop's committees, task forces and delegations, annual conference cabinet posts and denominational boards of directors. He has been a delegate to four General Conferences between 1984 and 1992, and was the coordinator of the New York Conference's "Medicine to Mozambique" ministry, which delivered $300,000 worth of medicine to hospitals in the famine and war zone in 1985.

Day earned a Master of Divinity degree from Yale Divinity School and a Bachelor's degree from Silliman University in the Philippines

BytesYoungsook Charlene Kang is Deputy General Secretary for Mission Contexts and Relationships and Mission Education. Her responsibilities include conference and ecumenical relationships, global justice issues, leadership development, and the analysis, evaluation and interpretation of concerns in the church's global mission fields.

Prior to joining the board she was pastor at Wheat Ridge United Methodist Church in Colorado and First United Methodist Church in Golden, CO.

Kang also has been a member of the GBGM board of directors and a delegate to General Conferences 1996 and 2000. A clergy member of the Rocky Mountain Conference, she chaired the conference's Ministerial Education Fund/Continuing Education of the Board of Ordained Ministry. She currently serves as president of the National Association of Korean-American Clergywomen of the United Methodist Church and is a member of the board of trustees of Iliff School of Theology.

Kang earned a Master of Divinity degree from Iliff School of Theology and Master's degree from the University of Denver and Korea University. She earned an undergraduate degree from Sogang University in Korea.

Photo of Edith Gleaves. - 6381 BytesEdith Gleaves is Deputy General Secretary for Mission Personnel. Her responsibilities include the recruitment, selection, training, assignment and nurture of nearly 2,000 United Methodist mission personnel around the world.

Before joining the staff of the mission board she was pastor of Resurrection United Methodist Church in Durham, NC. Prior to that she was associate director of the North Carolina Conference Council on Ministries. She also has served as associate pastor of North Raleigh United Methodist Church and pastor of Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Raleigh.

A two-term director of the Board of Ordained Ministry and chair of its evaluation and morale committee, Gleaves has served on several Bishops' task forces and was a delegate to the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference in 1996 and 2000. The North Carolina Conference awarded her its "Significant Achievement in Race Relations" award in 1996.

Gleaves earned an Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School and a Bachelor's degree from Wake Forest University.
