Twenty-fifth Staff Recognition Event
New York, November 4. The General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM)
began the season of thanksgiving by honoring longtime staff for their years of service.
General Secretary, Dr. Randolph Nugent, presided over a festive staff appreciation
luncheon, following a tradition designated by the GBGM board.
The luncheon, with standing room only in The Interchurch Center's Sockman
Lounge, brought together 319 GBGM staff who work in the field as well as in New York.
With staff focusing on mission partners around the world, the luncheon was a rare
chance for celebration of their own work.
Dr. Nugent recognized the honorees' strength and personal journeys to serve
God's mission. For example, Zebediah Marewangepo had to walk 35 miles,
barefooted, to attend first grade at age twelve. Today, he is the executive secretary for
West and southern Africa and is completing his doctorate degree at the Theological
School of Drew University. Karen Prudente and her family had to flee the repressive
government of President Marcos in the Philippines. She is now the Assistant Treasurer
for the Women's Division.
The honorees spoke with gratitude, candor, and humor and were acknowledged as
role models. Betty Edwards, reminisced that she had just given birth to her daughter
when she first came to GBGM as a part time bookkeeper. Today, she is a proud
grandmother and Controller of the GBGM. And, when Gladys Campbell was hired 25
years ago, she was a trail blazer as one of the first female executives to work at GBGM.
She is now executive secretary for Town & Country ministries.
