Bishop J. Alfred Ndoricimpa (Burundi Area), Recipient of the Distinguished Peacemaker Award - Africa

Jean Alfred Ndoricimpa was born in 1944 in Mihama, Province of Rutana, in the Republic of Burundi. In 1972, he married Sabina Ngeza, who is the current president of the United Methodist Women organization and the manager of Gitega Commercial Bank. The couple has one daughter and one son. Bishop Ndoricimpa holds a diploma from Mweya Theological Institute, a Certificate in Bookkeeping and Public Administration from the British Tutorial College of Nairobi, a Certificate in Management from Mwanza Workshop in Tanzania, and a Certificate from Child Evangelism Institute in Bujumbura, Burundi. Jean Alfred became a pastor with the World Gospel Church, an interdenominational group from the U.S. with a Wesleyan doctrine, that started in Burundi 1936.

In July 1978, he became his church's legal representative and led his church towards the indigenization which came into effect in 1980. The name of the church was changed into the Evangelical Episcopal Church in Burundi. He became the first bishop of the Evangelical Episcopal Church on August 17, 1980, in the manner and tradition of the Methodist Church. In 1982, he led the negotiation of his church in order to be a part of The United Methodist Church, and this came into effect in May 1984 during the General Conference held in Baltimore, Maryland. In August 1984, the Burundi annual conference joined other Annual Conferences as part of the Africa Central Conference. The ecumenical positions held by Bishop J. Alfred Ndoricimpa are: the current president and the legal representative of the Burundi Council of Churches, and the president of the Council of Burundi Protestant Bishops.
